C03S04 The Daleks' masterplan

Synopsis

The TARDIS arrives on the planet Kembel, where the Doctor discovers that the Daleks have allied themselves with several alien races and developed a weapon capable of destroying the very fabric of time - The Time Destructor.  Providing the vital core of Taranium is the treacherous Guardian of the Solar System, Mavic Chen.

The Doctor manages to steal the Taranium, and a chase ensues, in an attempt to warn Earth of the Daleks and Chen's plans.  The survival of the Solar System is at stake; only the Doctor and his friends can prevent a catastrophe.  However, there is no guarantee they will all escape with their lives...

Commentary

Can we please put to rest the myth surrounding the end of episode 7, The Feast of Steven.  While uncommon for the era and jarringly out of character, William Hartnell's breaking the fourth wall and wishing the audience at home a Merry Christmas was neither a television first nor an unscripted ad-lib.

He may have fluffed the line, but this late addition was agreed and added to the camera scripts during rehearsals.  Had this not been the case, it could (relatively) easily have been cut from the end of the video tape prior to transmission.  Doctor Who was never a live perfomance broadcast from studio.

...of note:

The first Doctor Who "Christmas Special": The Feast of Steven, was the only episode never telerecorded to film, nor sold abroad.  It was also the first episode for which the 2-inch master tape was authorised for erasure.  As such it holds the distinction of being the only lost episode with absolutely no hope of recovery.

What is the most unlikely thing you can think of a Dalek doing?  Why, whispering of course!  And it's here in this story!
