C05S03 The Ice Warriors
Synopsis
In the distant future, Earth faces a new Ice Age. While a dedicated team of scientists battle to hold the approaching glaciers at bay, a startling discovery is made deep within the ice... an alien warrior, frozen for millennia. When the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria arrive they soon discover Earth is under threat from the Ice Warriors - fearsome Martians intent on conquering our planet for themselves...
Cover notes
It's testament to the enduring popularity of Brian Hayles' creations that the fearsome Ice Warriors returned for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary year. The reptiles from Mars battled the Doctor in just four stories between 1967 and 1974, but made such an impact that they are regarded as one of the programme's most popular monsters. And it all began right here...
Writer Brian Hayles (who had contributed The Celestial Toymaker to William Hartnell's third season) had been fascinated by the story of the Beresovka mammoth which was discovered frozen inside a block of ice in 1900, and this became the inspiration for his next set of scripts.
Screened as part of the fondly-remembered 'Monsters Season', The Ice Warriors was an instant success and demand for a rematch was granted in 1969 when they returned in The Seeds of Death. Later the Martians were pitted against the Third Doctor in The Curse of Peladon (1972) and The Monster of Peladon (1974). And then,... not a hiss, until 2013 when they lumbered centre-stage once again. All six episodes of this story were missing from the BBC Archives until 1988, when four were discovered in an old BBC building being readied for refurbishment - and fans detonated in excitement. While episodes two and three remain lost (search everywhere please - yes, even in there), they have been recreated for this DVD release in animated form, allowing us to enjoy this classic Second Doctor adventure in full for the first time in 46 years!
