Cover notes
When the readers of Doctor Who Magazine were asked to vote for the story they would most like to see released on DVD, their ovwewhelming verdict was Pyramids of Mars. It's not hard to understand why this is such a highly regarded story. Many say that Doctor Who came of age under producer Philip Hinchcliffe, and over his three years at the helm, the series steadily developed a greater sense of dramam, combines with a touch of horror and black humour. Not for the first time Hinchcliffe demonstrated his mastery of the formula with Pyramids of Mars. Doctor Who's strong portrayal of the past, coupled with the gothic setting of an English mansion at the turn of the twentieth century, as well as imagery of ancient Egypt - particularly the robot mummies - makes for compulsive viewing. Add to this one of Tom Baker's most intense performances, and Gabriel Woolfe providing a chilling villain in Sutekh, and Pyramids of Mars stands the test of time.
