C04S03 The power of the Daleks

Synopsis

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan.  Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder.

Meanwhile, in another part of the colony an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps.  The colony's misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal 'creatures' inside.

This six-part adventure takes place immediately after the first regeneration, as the Time Lord and his companions, Polly and Ben, do battle with an old foe on the mysterious planet Vulcan.  How will Polly and Ben cope with a new Doctor?  How will the Doctor take to his new body?  And how will they ever overcome the power of the Daleks?

The Derek Dodd Collection [2020]   (easter egg) In the Summer of 2019, a unique collection of film and photographs came to light, related to the original 1966 production of The Power of the Daleks. The material included colour and black and white images taken during the original recording sessions at Ealing Studios and Riverside Studios. The images had been kept by the story's production designer, the late Derek Dodd. [disc 2]
Original title sequence   The original Doctor Who title sequence was created in August 1963 by designers Bernard Lodge and Ben Palmer of the BBC Graphics Unit.  The 36 second long film sequence was used to introduce every single Doctor Who episode between 1963 and 1967.
The original film negative of that sequence was never formally archived and has been lost since the late 1960s.
Recently however, an original film print of the full sequence was discovered in a private collection.  This film has now been re-scanned and digitally remastered in high definition and is presented here in full for the first time... [disc 2]

Ep. 1 cut fragment [2020]   (easter egg) During production of the final version of The Power of the Daleks animation in 2020, a short section of action was cut from the first episode of the story for practical reasons.
This section (lasting for around 16 seconds) features the Doctor playing a recorder in the TARDIS.  The section contains no dialogue.  However, the sound of the Doctor's feet can be heard tapping on the floor. [disc 1]

Surviving footage   The power of the Daleks was never formally archived by the BBC film and videotape archive.  The last known complete set of film recordings are believed to have been destroyed in 1975.
Today, no complete film recordings are know to exist of any of the six episodes of The power of the Daleks.
This compilation represents all of the footage still known to exist. [disc 2]

Dalek recording session [1966-09-12]   Recorded at BBC Maida Vale Studios [disc 2]
Incidental Music   Presented here in full, the incidental music used in The power of the Daleks was composed by Tristram Cary.  The score was made up entirely of pre-existing tracks that Cary had previously composed for earlier Doctor Who stories.
These tracks were then creatively re-deployed in The power of the Daleks.
Most of the music was orinally composed for the very first Dalek serial in 1963, with the rest being drawn from Cary's score for the 1965/66 Dalek story, The Daleks' masterplan. [disc 2]
Photogrammetry [2019]   Photogrammetry is a technique whereby multiple images of a place or object can be used to recreate that place or object as a 3 dimensional 'model' inside a computer.  Once inside the computer, a virtual camera can then be moved around the place or object, allowing a view of that place or object as if it was really there.
Three photogrammetry views of the original sets from The power of the Daleks have been created here using photographs taken in Riverside Studios, Studio 1 in late 1966 during the original production. [disc 2]

In the September of 1966, the Doctor Who production team spent two days at Ealing Studios in West London, filming a number of miniature effects scenes for their latest Doctor Who story, The power of the Daleks.
Of the footage filmed over those two days, only fragments now survive in the archives.  the rest is lost.
In early 2020, a team based at Ealing Studios, set out to re-film some of this now lost footage.  Using only black and white film stock that was available in 1966 and copies of the original miniature sets and Dalek props... [disc 3]
